Diet

The diet varies, depending on its availability in the particular place of the rat’s residence. Rats are omnivorous, but if there is a choice, they prefer plant-based feed: they eat different parts of the plant. Rats’ menu also includes almost any food that people and domestic animals consume, as well as food residues, raw materials for food production, offal, various small animals.

Habitat

In Latvia, rats prefer to settle in farmsteads, rural villages, small towns. It is relatively rare in large cities, only in port cities (for instance, in Riga). But there are plenty of them in Daugavpils City, for example. They prefer living in relatively dry places – in the upper parts of ships and buildings (upper floors of buildings, attics, insulated auxiliary rooms), agricultural product warehouses, containers in ports, dry barns, barns, grain dryers.
