Brown Knapwerd /Centaurea jacea/

Brown knapweed is a plant species in the aster family, commonly found throughout Latvia in various habitats, both moderately dry and moderately moist, in open or wooded areas.

The stem of brown knapweed is erect, ribbed, and grainy, with lanceolate leaves, entire margins, and the lower leaves strongly toothed. It produces solitary flower heads at the top of the stem, with a pink-violet color. It blooms throughout the summer.

In official medicine, this plant is not used; however, it is popular in folk medicine. Preparations made from it are believed to have diuretic, bile-expelling, relaxing, anti-inflammatory, and strengthening properties. It is used in the treatment of stomach issues, headaches, jaundice, edema, and kidney diseases.
