Coltsfoot /Tussilago farfara/

Coltsfoot is a perennial, small (during flowering 5-15 cm, during leafing 10-25 cm) herbaceous plant in the aster family. The flowering and leafing periods are separate, with leaves appearing after the plant has flowered. The flowers are pale yellow, blooming in April and early May.

In Latvia, coltsfoot is very commonly found, ranging from individual specimens to large groups in various meadows, along roadsides, in clearings, and near water bodies.

The scientific name Tussilago is derived from the Latin word tussis, meaning cough. Coltsfoot has traditional uses in herbal medicine. A decoction of coltsfoot leaves promotes expectoration, and the leaves have a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect, inhibiting bacterial growth.
