Common Bulrush /Scirpus lacustris/

Common bulrush is a variable-looking species of the sedge family. It is very common throughout the territory of Latvia, forming stands in various water bodies and coastal areas of the sea.

The common bulrush is a perennial, 1-2.5 meters tall sedge with a round, leafless, dark green stem. The inflorescence is a compact spike at the top of the stem. It blooms in June and July.

Fish and other aquatic animals use common bulrush stands as shelters. Snails and other grazers feed on the algal layer that forms on the stem of the common bulrush. The green stems are used for making various household items such as baskets, table mats, and chairs, as well as insulation material for garden mulching. Water researchers use them as indicators to assess the nutrient content in the water.
