How does it look?

Common rudd boasts a relatively tall body, slightly compressed on the sides, with an upward-facing mouth. In Latvia, the body length of common rudd can surpass 30 cm, accompanied by a weight exceeding a kilogram. This fish showcases a striking appearance, adorned with golden scales and vivid red fins. The iris of the eye tends to be reddish or orange. Its back exhibits hues of bluish-gray, greenish-gray, or greenish-brown, while the sides and belly gleam in golden tones. Notably, the throat is equipped with teeth arranged in two rows, giving them a serrated appearance.

Where does it live?

Common rudd thrives in various Latvian water ecosystems, including rivers, lakes, and coastal areas. It particularly favors habitats rich in vegetation but not overly enclosed. This species is commonly found in shallow waters, especially those with abundant water grass or reed beds.

Common rudd sustains itself by consuming plankton, insects, and various plant parts.

Interesting and important facts

In Latvia, roaches reach reproductive maturity when they are approximately 6-13 cm long. The fish are fertile and can lay 0.6 to 469.2 thousand eggs. The roach eggs, which are colorless or light yellow, stick to plants after hatching. The longest known lifespan of a roach is 19 years. Roaches form hybrids with bream, bleak, perch, and pike.
