Dog Rose /Rosa canina/
Dog rose, also known as wild rose, is a species of the rose genus. It is a medium-sized shrub (height ranging from 1-5 m). The bark is brown, and on young stems, it is greenish. Thorns on the stem are strong. It blooms in June and July, typically in a pink hue. Its fruit is an aggregate of achenes with a fleshy receptacle. When the fruit ripens, it takes on a bright red color.
Dog rose is widely represented in European heraldry in a stylized form. It is not widely distributed in Latvia, mainly found in the western part of the country. It grows individually or in small groups in shrubs, forest edges, and various open habitats.
The fruits of dog rose are used in folk medicine. Fruit tea is used for treating colds, and seeds are used for urinary stone, rheumatism, and gout treatment.
