Important and interesting facts

There are 2 species of toads in Latgale: the green toad and the common toad.

The green toad is one of the most colourful toads in Europe: its spine is grey with well-defined dark green spots and tiny red warts.

The internal resonator is well developed, the green toad “sings” quite intensively throughout the spawning period. The song is melodic, very distinctive.

Active at dusk and at night, also during the day after thunderstorms or during cloudy weather and round the clock during the spawning season. Often seen on warm summer evenings hopping along pavements, hunting for insects that gather in the light of street lamps. Often seen in greenhouses. In gardens, significantly reduces pest numbers.

It is listed in the Red Data Book of the Baltic region, as well as on the European Red List of Amphibians!
