Grey partridge
Grey partridge, also known as the grey-legged partridge, Hungarian partridge, or hun.
Size: 30–33 cm in length, 390–500 g, wingspan 53–56 cm
Vocalisations: The song is a harsh, high-pitched kieerr-ik, and when disturbed, it flies a short distance on rounded wings, often calling rick rick rick as it rises.
Habitat: most commonly found on field and ditch margins, woodlands, meadows, pastures, cereal fields, but also near settlements in winter.
Behaviour: They are a seed-eating species, but the young in particular take insects. The nest is usually in the margin of a cereal field, most commonly winter wheat. Only females build the nest. The male, meanwhile, guards the territory. The nest is built in a dry place on the ground. Hens lay up to twenty eggs in a ground nest. 500-5,000 pairs nest in Latvia.
