Hawkweeds /Hieracium/
Hawkweeds belong to the plant genus closely related to dandelions, chicories, lettuces, and hawkbits. The hawkweeds form a large genus, with more than 10.000 recognized species and subspecies. They typically bloom with yellow flowers in May to June, sometimes extending until September. The plant is a valuable nectar source. Hawkweeds are found throughout Latvia, growing both individually and in groups in dry forests, shrubs, hills, and dry meadows.
For medicinal purposes, the entire plant is collected. Hawkweeds possess anti-inflammatory, diuretic, astringent, antiseptic, and antimicrobial properties. They are used as a hemostatic, wound-healing, and antiseptic remedy, particularly for bleeding and slow-healing wounds. Hawkweeds are also employed as a soothing agent for headaches and a calming remedy for insomnia.
