Hedge Bindweed /Calystegia sepium/
It is a perennial, twining (1-4 m) bindweed species. The root system extends deep into the ground (up to 2 m). The stem is bare, ridged. The flowers are large (4-6 cm), with a white or almost white corolla. It blooms in July and August.
It grows throughout the territory of Latvia; in groups of various sizes along riverbanks, in wastelands, and on the edges of gardens. Hedge bindweed is a weed that is almost impossible to eradicate by digging, as it quickly regrows from small root fragments. Both hedge bindweed and field bindweed are very resilient weeds, and herbicides are not very effective in controlling them.
To get rid of them, you can:
- regularly mow, destroying young shoots and weakening the root system;
- periodically dig up the area occupied by bindweed and carefully remove the roots;
- cover the affected area with black plastic for at least two years.
