Herb-Paris /Paris quadrifolia/
It is a perennial plant of the Lily family, found throughout Latvia in damp thickets and forests. The plant forms 4-6 leaves arranged in a whorl at the top of the stem, from which the single flower develops. After flowering, a bluish-black berry with many seeds forms from the flower. The entire plant, including the flowers, has a characteristic unpleasant odor.
The whole plant is poisonous to humans! It contains saponins, which can cause abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, heart disturbances, and dizziness. Children, especially attracted by the shiny, beautiful berries, are particularly susceptible to poisoning.
