Marsh Marigold /Caltha palustris/

Marsh marigold is a perennial herbaceous plant of the buttercup family. It reaches an average height of up to 40 cm. The golden-yellow flowers, consisting of five petals, begin to bloom when the plant is around 10 years old. The first flowers open in April, and the flowering period lasts until mid-May, with the possibility of a second bloom in autumn.

The bright color of the flowers allows the plant to concentrate sunlight, raising the temperature and attracting pollinating insects. Marsh marigold is widespread throughout Latvia, thriving in bogs, moist meadows, and along riverbanks. While fresh, the plant is toxic due to the presence of anemonol, but it is used in homeopathy and cultivated as an ornamental plant.
