How do they look?

Peacock moths are large butterflies with a wingspan ranging from 4.5 to 10 cm. They have a short and stout body. Their wings feature large eye-shaped spots, resembling the patterns on peacock feathers, hence the name. These caterpillars are typically large, greenish, and cylindrically shaped, with various colorful protuberances.

What do they eat?

Green, chubby, hairy caterpillars feed on various tree and shrub leaves.

Interesting and important facts

Mainly nocturnal species, although some actively fly during the day. In Latvia, there are two species; one of them is grey peacock, which is a protected insect.
