Red Clover /Trifolium pratense/

Red clover is a biennial or perennial herb of the legume family with a strong, branched root system that develops nodules containing nitrogen-fixing bacteria. The stem is upright and branched. The flowers are pink, reddish-brown, or purplish, arranged in large, round heads. It blooms from June to September. Red clover is commonly found in meadows, fields, forest edges, road verges, and is cultivated as a valuable forage plant. It is also a good nectar source.

Red clover grows in all types of Latvian soils except for strongly acidic and very poor soils. It is a beneficial precursor for other crop plants.

In folk medicine, tea made from red clover flowers is used for the treatment of chronic cough, bronchial asthma, fever, and respiratory illnesses.
