How do they look?
Swallowtail butterflies are the most colorful moths. Their wingspan ranges from 52 to 90 mm, making them some of the largest butterflies in Latvia. They have a rounded head, short antennae, and well-developed legs. The color of their wings is diverse. Caterpillars are large and relatively immobile.
Where do they live?
Caterpillars typically live on herbaceous plants and trees. The caterpillars of the Swallowtail butterfly feed on plants from the carrot family, such as parsley, dill, and fennel.
Interesting and important facts
Swallowtail butterflies, such as old world swallowtail and scarce swallowtail, are among the most vibrant moths in Latvia. The caterpillars of these butterflies lack sharp spines, but they possess two pouch-shaped glands behind their heads that can release a secretion with an unpleasant odor in times of danger.
