This variable-looking plant belongs to the sedge family. In Latvia, it is quite common throughout the territory, especially in overly moist areas like meadows, marshes, along water bodies, and near flooded depressions in forests and shrubs.

It is a perennial, medium to large-sized (40-120 cm) sedge. It flowers in May and June. Sedges, in the form of sour feed, serve as good fodder for cattle.
