
Wild Strawberry /Fragaria vesca/
It is a perennial, small to medium-sized (length 5-30 cm) plant of the rose family. Widely distributed in Latvia. It has a short rhizome, fine roots, long and creeping stems. The leaves are arranged in a rosette, three-parted. The flowers are white, 2 cm in diameter on long flower stalks. The flower has five white petals. It blooms from May to July, and the fruits ripen in June-July.
Wild strawberry fruits contain ascorbic acid (20-50%), carotene, vitamin B1, sugars (10-15%), malic acid, salicylic acid, and more.
The fruits and leaves are a valuable source of vitamins. Wild strawberries' fruits have strengthening, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, bile- and diuretic properties.
