Wych Elm /Ulmus glabra/

Wych elm is an evergreen tree of the beech family. Among the beech genus, it is the most widespread species in Europe, including Latvia. Common elms can grow from 15 to 30 m in height. The leaves are elliptical and alternately arranged. Wych elm can be most reliably distinguished from the common European elm by its flowers and fruits, but leaf characteristics can also be used for identification. The fruit is a flat samara. It typically blooms in April and May.
