Honey Fungus

Honey fungus is a very common mushroom in Latvia, belonging to the family Physalacriaceae, and its fruiting bodies are edible. The frequent parasitism of the species on living trees leads to their damage, causing significant losses in forestry and fruit growing.

The fruiting bodies of honey fungus form dense clusters on wood, where their mycelium grows. They are capable of infecting various coniferous and broadleaf tree species, although they are more commonly found on deciduous trees.

It is advisable to boil honey fungus, as well as all other species in the Armillaria genus, for about half an hour before consumption, as consuming them without boiling may cause digestive issues.

If you have doubts about a specific mushroom while foraging, it is better not to take the risk and leave it behind.
