Globeflower /Trollius europaeus/
It is a perennial member of the buttercup family. Due to its yellow and round flowers, the plant has many colorful folk names: buttercup, chicken head, chicken button, rabbit button, bulbous poppy, buttercup, and others. It is a medium-sized plant, ranging from 30-80 cm tall depending on growth conditions.
The leaf shape is similar to buttercups or poppies, and without flowers, these plants can easily be confused. The yellow flowers are 1.5-2.5 cm in diameter, occurring singly at the end of the stem. Globe flowers can be pollinated by either very small insects or larger ones that, with their weight, can press into the flower cup and reach the nectar.
European globeflower blooms in May and early June. In Latvia, European globeflowers are found throughout the territory, growing in moist meadows, riverbanks, and forest meadows - places with nutrient-rich, consistently moist soil.
European globeflower is a popular ornamental plant, and several varieties suitable for cultivation in gardens have been developed.
It possesses antibacterial, spasmolytic, diuretic, cholagogue, and anti-inflammatory properties; however, it is not recommended for use in folk medicine due to its toxic nature. In 2022, the Latvian Botanical Society selected European globeflower as the Plant of the Year for their 70th anniversary.
