Saffron Milk-cap
Saffron milk-cap is a commonly found large mushroom belonging to the milk-cap family, and its fruiting bodies are edible.
In Latvia, it grows in small groups, primarily from late July to September, in pine forests. It typically chooses sunny areas with sandy soil, open or covered with a little grass or moss, and along roadsides. It is often found in places where common or buttery boletes can be found in the summers.
The mushroom's cap is orange-red to brick-red, with pronounced darker concentric zones. The milk is bright orange, abundant, with a mild, slightly bitter taste, gradually turning green in the air. This mushroom is one of the rare species historically gathered for food across Europe.
