Stone Bramble /Rubus saxatilis/
It is a perennial, small (10-30 cm) plant belonging to the rose family. Commonly found in Latvia, it grows in various forests, clearcuts, forest edges, and shrubby areas. The plant has upright flowering stems and creeping infertile stems that root at the ends towards the end of the growing season, thus reproducing vegetatively. The leaves are bright green, composed of three leaflets with a doubly serrated margin. The stems have few thorns, and they are relatively soft.
It blooms with white flowers in May, and the fruits ripen in July. The fruit consists of brightly red, shiny, juicy drupelets (usually 4-8), which are easily separable. The berries can be enjoyed with sugar or cream, with milk and honey, as a sauce and dried spice. From stone bramble, you can make vinegar and wine, tea, dried berries, but fresh berries are best for consumption. They can be used to prepare kvass, juice, compote, jams, jellies, syrups, and more. To store them for a longer period, berries are covered with sugar or soaked in water and stored in a cool place (in the refrigerator, cellar, or freezer).
